1:1 Coaching

"I received several coaching sessions with Satinder Bal in recent weeks. I have never received coaching before but Satinder explained the process and benefits ahead of the sessions so I felt clear on what to expect from the sessions particularly from a practical perspective. What I didn’t expect was the degree of positive change I would experience as a result. I arrived with a general feeling of overwhelm within my work environment that was making me feel stuck,  this was holding me back and affecting my productivity, performance and confidence.

Satinder was able to really listen to what I was saying and ask me questions that allowed me to take a step back, explore my thoughts and feelings  therefore allowing me articulate my scattered  thoughts much more clearly. Satinder is so approachable and easy to talk to and always managed to ask the questions that would allow me to explore issues and possible solutions. By creating achievable goals and giving me accountability for implementing them, I was able to implement small but very effective changes to my practice that had an exponential impact. Firstly my mind set, and ultimately my way of working so that I felt completely different at the end of the sessions. I had clarity, an ongoing plan and felt much more organised and productive. I think the change in mind set was the most powerful thing though, that’s what really provided the drive to engage with, continue with and embed the changes I’ve made, so far….I would love more coaching and plan to have more in the future.

I think having someone to talk to that’s really listening to you, that is fully engaged and invested in your coaching, has the skill to help you work out what your issues are then what you can do to make positive and lasting change is so incredibly valuable. I think everyone should have coaching, it really does help to unlock your potential! I wouldn't wait until feeling so overwhelmed again, it has a place for long before that happens." At the beginning of each session you set the scene nicely and efficiently reminded me of the character and intention of coaching. I liked the way you did that and helped me settle my mind for the session ahead. Despite my anxiety that I might at times be talking inconsequential rubbish or deviating from the purpose of the session you always skilfully drew out themes suitable for coaching from what I was saying and invited me to consider which I would wish to follow for the session. That suggested an incredible level of active listening working in tandem with a supporting structure or framework. Sometimes thinking gets the better of me (over thinking) but I do like thinking and exploring ideas. I enjoyed the space you gave me to do it and to actually articulate my thoughts – which can help crystalise them. Importantly, if I stalled in my thinking you would ‘re-wind’ to a particular junction in my commentary and encourage me to explore other potential routes. I also like that you were able to skilfully shepherd me into drawing my own conclusions as to how I should proceed without a sense of being rushed or indeed forced down an avenue not of my choosing. Each session started with me having a level of uncertainly as to whether ‘I’ was doing ‘it’ right but at the conclusion of each I felt I had achieved something meaningful. And, over the course of the sessions I was conscious of starting to introduce the coaching questions and ways of thinking into my day-to-day situations in such a way that I was effectively sorting problems into manageable actions before they added to any sense of ‘overwhelm’. Learning to create self-generated (all be it guided) small level accountability for my own success has been a valuable lesson, allowing me to break problems down into manageable portions and thereby wade through. It was totally opportune that I was exposed to coaching by you and I feel very lucky for that. I believe you are a natural for doing this kind of work as you made it seem easy yet I have felt so much benefit. Thank you. (Alistair, Inverness)

I have found these sessions helpful - in particular your ability to listen and understand my situation.

I have particularly found the "leaf into the stream" approach helpful that we discussed - it does take a lot of practice -but does help with releasing thoughts.

I also appreciated the positive coaching - helping me realise that I'm doing better than I think I am (Stewart, Inverness)

The last 2 weeks Coaching sessions has completely changed my mindset.

The coaching has helped me to see the situations in front of me with so much more clarity and to reflect on them from a positive perspective. If I could describe it to someone else, I would say, it could be life changing, my mental health, heart rate, stress levels and perspective have all benefitted so much. I am thinking clearer and am generally feeling so much better in myself and my environment.

I will be recommending you to my colleagues and friends. Thank you for your time and commitment. Your thoughtful, calm and relaxed approach is so refreshing and comforting. Thank you. Marianne McInnes (Nairn)

I cannot recommend Dr Bal more highly. From the very beginning, she created a space that felt safe, thoughtful and genuinely supportive.

She is exceptionally kind, wise and patient and she listens with a level of attentiveness that makes you feel truly heard and understood. Her comments were always insightful and carefully considered, often gently challenging my own fixed patterns of thinking and helping me explore different perspectives I hadn’t previously allowed myself to consider.

Through our sessions, she helped me develop a deeper understanding of myself and my motivations, which in turn enabled me to make more informed and authentic choices- choices that genuinely felt right for me rather than driven by habit or assumption. Her ability to ask the right questions at the right time is a real skill and it made a meaningful difference to my personal and professional growth.

I would wholeheartedly recommend her as a coach. She brings warmth, intelligence and deep compassion and I have no doubt she will have a profoundly positive impact on all those she works with. (Dr Marion Slater, Aberdeen)

Leading without depleting

Thank you so much for what really was an excellent session. I felt as though I was in a safe space to chat through things I was having difficulty with.

I felt like the conversations we had about how to tackle various issues were very productive and goal orientated which suits my objective style very well.

Professional Agency

It felt constructive, we weren't just complaining about things but looking at problems that feel out of our control and finding small ways to have control over a situation.

It helps with communication and will equip me to be more involved in my job and will help with longevity."

"Well being and professional identity were greatly enhanced by this course."

"Everything about the course was very good."

The coaching part was very good to systematically think through a problem and how to go about achieving something."
One thing I will do differently: "Set myself a goal and think about the different ways to achieve it, what might obstruct it and how I can influence things within my control."

Course covered areas of clinical and professional practice which isn’t covered during the university education. Touching on areas such as managing stress, and taking active measures to combat those stressors I found beneficial."
